Meet Your Technician: Joe Kemple

Piano Service for the State of Missouri Since 1988.

Many people see a piano as just a heavy piece of furniture. However, once you open it up, you’re looking at a remarkably complicated instrument that requires a specific mix of mechanical repair and musical judgment to keep it working correctly.

I grew up around this trade. As a 3rd generation piano technician, I’ve spent my life learning the craftsmanship and the specific problems that Missouri pianos face. When I show up to your home, I’m bringing 38 years of experience that started in my grandfather’s workshop and has included work for major universities and top-tier piano dealers.

My Approach to Your Piano

I usually spend more time on a tuning than the “quick-turn” guys. My goal isn’t just to make it sound better for today, but to ensure it stays stable for the long term. My focus includes:

  • Stability for the Missouri Climate: Setting the tuning pins properly so the piano can handle our extreme humidity shifts.

  • Mechanical Troubleshooting: Fixing the root cause of sticky keys, sluggish parts, or odd noises.

  • Tonal Balance: Adjusting the hammers and strings to make sure the piano has a consistent, pleasing “voice” across the entire keyboard.

Professional Experience

I’ve maintained instruments in some of the most demanding professional environments in the state:

  • Staff Experience: I served as the on-staff piano technician for Truman State University, where I was responsible for their entire inventory of performance and practice pianos.

  • Dealer Background: I have worked as a technician for two different Steinway & Sons dealers, preparing high-end instruments for sale and stage.

  • Specialized Training: I am factory-certified by Yamaha, QRS, and PianoDisc, and I am a certified installer for Dampp-Chaser Piano Life Saver Systems.

A Background in Music

I believe you have to be a musician to really understand how a piano should feel and respond.

  • Performing: I performed as a trumpet player with the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps and have played bass in several rock bands in the St. Louis area.

  • Technical Interests: I am a lifelong Ham Radio operator (KZØN) with a deep interest in audio and communications technology.

  • Local Roots: My family has provided piano service in Missouri for over 60 years. I’m proud to continue that work for my neighbors here in St. Louis.

My Promise to You

“I treat every piano as if it were my own. Whether it’s a family heirloom or a professional’s workhorse, my goal is to make it a joy for you to play.”
