Award winner author/poet and accomplished guitarist David Baker mentions that Smokey “…gave me lessons in an empty room above Shaw Music.”
In early 2026, a viral story which was posted widely on guitar-related social media sites, stated that, “In 1966, I started taking lessons again at Shaw Music from a superb player, Allen “Smokey” Burd. He had bad eyes, wore tinted glasses, and could play nearly anything. Although he toured with Loretta Lynn, he especially liked jazz, which is what I studied with him.” -original author unknown
